Walking Over Alice's Grave - Chapter 1

This is a fanfic I wrote about five years ago, exploring what could have happened if Yuri had died and Alice had lived in the first Shadow Hearts game.  The original is here; this is a rewrite.

I Can't Keep That Promise
Yuri Volte Hyuga, Shadow Hearts: Covenant

My dear, sweet Yuri is dead. He is dead. He is gone. I hope that by repeating this, the pain will be numbed, but no…it still hurts.  Yuri is gone. Just like my father, and my mother before him.

We were on a train, travelling to Zurich, my mother's hometown. I still had family there, and with no other pressing engagements, Zurich was the only place we had any reason to visit.  Yuri had no family, but if he did, I would have gone with him.  I would have followed him to the ends of the earth.  It is only fear of disappointing him that keeps me from following him into death.  He fought so hard for my life.

We had fallen asleep on the train; when I awoke, Yuri did not. I shook him, and I even slapped him, but he would not stir. I picked him up - he is so much lighter now, in death - and carried him off the train. I carried him as far as I could, then I placed him gently on the ground. I checked again that he was truly dead, and, oh god, he was, he was. I dug a hole with my bare hands, tears flowing down my face.

It was only a few days ago that I kissed him for the first time, after our victory in Neameto.  I shake the memory from my head as I loosen my blue ribbon, but removing that ribbon brings back another memory, of the only time Yuri has ever seen me with my hair loose.  I grit my teeth, and tie the ribbon around his wrist.

Then I take the crucifix from my throat.  It belonged to Yuri’s mother, Anne.  She gave it to his father, who gave it to Quihua, a little girl he met. When we were in Shanghai, Quihua’s father gave it to Yuri.  Yuri gave it me. We had not known each other long at the time, but he was so caring.  He told me to wear it in battle. He said it always had a calming effect, and as I was not used to battles it might help me.  It did. Whenever I felt myself start to panic, to go berserk, I looked at the cross and more often than not, I would snap out of it and find another reserve of strength
.
I was undecided as to whether Yuri would want the cross or would prefer that I kept it. He loved me, I knew he did. This is not pure vanity. Last night, when he thought I was asleep, he whispered it to me. I very nearly was asleep, so I didn’t reply, only smiled a little. More than anything now, I wish I had answered him. I love him. I hope he knew that. I wish I'd told him. No, if I am to wish, I wish I could tell him right now, and he could answer. But the dead cannot answer.

That thought gives me pause.  I am an exorcist.

I had forgotten that, in the horror of this moment. I cannot call unwilling souls, souls that have passed over. Only those souls with regrets, those that are still here on this plane. Does Yuri have regrets? I wonder…

After defeating the godlet, Yuri, the others and I all hid the émigré away, and then stayed in Rouen for a while, while we planned for the future. It was…four or five days, I believe. Meiyuan brought Koudelka from London, and she and Halley stayed overnight in Rouen before heading to Le Havre to catch a boat to America. Koudelka and I shared a room. Margarite had a room to herself, as did Yuri. Margarite said she needed her privacy. Yuri refused to share with either Halley or Zhuzhen, on the grounds that one was an adolescent with too much energy and the other was a grumpy old man. I do not believe he was serious, but Yuri got his own room anyway. Margarite jokingly suggested that she share with him, at which point he hugged me and said that I was his woman. I blushed, but I do like it when he refers to me that way. It makes – made – me feel protected. The suffragettes would not agree with me, but I do not care. It is not – was not – a case of Yuri seeking to control me, he merely wanted to protect me.

I cannot believe he is gone.

Halley and Zhuzhen shared a room. Meiyuan wanted to share too, but Halley and Zhuzhen were very…definite…about that. I think Zhuzhen's words were "Over my dead body". Keith had already turned into a silver bat and flown back to his castle in Bistritz.

That night Koudelka told me about everything that had happened when she had first visited the Neameton Monastery, over a decade ago.  James O’Flaherty, a friend of my father’s had run into her there.  I had vague childhood memories of him as a serious man, one who disapproved of my mother.  I, in turn, disapproved of him.  Who was he not to like my mother?

Koudelka had run into Edward Branckett when she first entered Neameton.  He was Hally’s father.  Koudelka and Edward were close in age – nineteen and twenty, respectively.  Neither took to James O’Flaherty much, particularly as he was much older, in his forties, and prone to disagreeing with people.

Patrick, the owner of Neameton, had been using the émigré manuscript in an attempt to revive his wife, Elaine.  Coincidentally, Elaine had also been James’ love, once, though Patrick had won her.  After her death, Patrick had gone mad with grief.  He committed numerous murders, in his attempts to make the spells in the émigré work as promised.  I heard of some of those murders, the ones where he hadn't been able to take the body away from the crime scene. The police never solved the case. Still, though it was evil, it was done out of love. I do not believe that the end justifies the means, but I believe the dead should rest in peace. Patrick has paid enough. I shall not be the one to give him away.

Koudelka and the others had found poor dead Patrick, rotting and run through with vines.  His wife had become an unholy horror; her body had revived, but her soul had not returned to it.  They realized that this creature had been the one to kill Patrick.  James’ sacrificed himself to save Koudelka and Edward.

That was the night Koudelka and Edward had become lovers. I asked her why. Did she love him?

She said that she didn’t know.  She was young, younger than I am now, and had honestly believed she was going to die.  I wonder if those are the things that brought Yuri and I together.

She also told me that Edward had made her feel normal.  I was fortunate in that my father was able to hide my powers, and I had not suffered.  Koudelka had been turned out by her family, hated and feared as a witch.  Feeling normal was unusual for her.

I see a little of Yuri in her words.  His mother was torn apart by their possessed neighbours right in front of him, and his father was killed when he tried to fuse with the Seraphic Radience.  Without them, he had been forced to fend for himself.  After watching his mother’s death at the hands of men he had known and trusted, it had taken him a long time to be able to trust anyone.

When I expressed these thoughts, Koudelka told me that that was why she’d sent Yuri to me.  She’d sensed the turmoil in his mind, as well as his strength.  She’d also felt drawn to me, due to the similarity of our powers.  She’d hoped we’d be able to help each other.

I blushed, and attempted to change the subject.  I asked why she was looking for Edward now.  Simply because he was Halley’s father?  Or was there something more to it?

Inside, I contemplated all the ways it could go wrong.  What if Edward had another family?  What if he pretended not to know her?

Koudelka picked up on my thoughts.  She has a most disconcerting habit of doing that.  She told me exactly what would happen to anyone who hurt her son, and I feared for Eddward Branckett if he wasn’t a good man.

She did not complete the sentence, but I wondered what it would be like to care for someone that much. I care for Yuri, of course, though in a different way than I would a child. He is older than me, by four years, though he does act like a child at times. I would not have him any other way.

The next day, Koudelka and Halley left, Zhuzhen going with them.  He was headed to Shanghai, and Le Havre was a good place to start from.

Koudelka looked at me, then Yuri with a strange expression on her face, before hugging us both and saying goodbye.  I wonder if she knew then what was going to happen?  I hate that she didn’t warn me, didn’t try to stop it, even though, logically, I know she couldn’t have done anything.

Margarite stayed in Rouen with us for a while. She asked me how I was feeling, whether I felt ill in any way whatsoever. I wondered why she was so concerned; as far as I could see, there was no cause for it.  She left Rouen the day before Yuri and I did.  She gave me one of her pistols when we said goodbye, told me to use it for my own protection.  I thanked her, but I did not think I would have need of it.

That was yesterday.  Last night, Yuri and I shared a room, and a bed.  Last night, Yuri told me he loved me.  Last night, Yuri was alive.

I am thinking about these stupid, irrelevant things to keep myself from crying, but it isn’t working!  Oh, Yuri, Yuri, how could you leave me again?! In those months after you disappeared in Shanghai I had hope.  I hadn’t seen you dead, so there was hope that you were out there somewhere.  But now, your corpse is in front of me, growing colder.

I cling to him, crying, sobbing.  “Please don’t leave me!  Please, Yuri!”

He can’t be dead.  How can he be dead?  He was alive, only a few hours ago.  I fell asleep in his loving arms, and woke up wrapped in a corpse.  I pray that I am dreaming.  I pray that the universe is mistaken, and that, soon, it will fix itself, and everything will be all right, and I’ll tell Yuri I thought he was dead, and he’ll laugh…

I howl at the sky, like an animal.  There is no other response.  My lover lies dead in my arms.

He had given me his father's coat on the train, told me to keep it forever.  He couldn't have known he was leaving me when he said that.  He couldn't.

I think that I should give it the coat back; he might be cold. But, he told me to keep it. He wrapped it around me and told me to keep it.

I lay him gently in the grave, placing his hands over his chest.  My ribbon curls around his wrist.

His pendant is still around his neck. The gem is a dull red colour, like dried blood.  Feeling guilty, I gently unclasp it and place it around my own neck.  I already have his coat, I know.  But I need more.  I need to keep more of him.  Dear god, I would keep all of him if I could.

His eyes are closed. I felt a morbid desire to open them, to see his eyes in death, to find another way to prove it to myself.  I keep trying to prove myself wrong.

His eyes were flat and grey, with nothing of their usual warmth.  I closed his eyelids and kissed him.  Then I turned away and began covering him over.  I didn’t let myself think, else I couldn’t have done it at all.

When I had finished I stood over the – the grave, oh god, it’s Yuri’s grave - and I opened the small bible my father had left me. I said a short prayer. The wind had begun to blow now and my hair blew in front of my eyes, obscuring my view. The wind tore my words from me the instant I said them, snatching them away.

Eventually, pushing my hair back with one hand, holding Yuri's necklace with the other, I screamed at the sky "I commend his soul to any God worthy of it!"

I was left panting.  I screamed again, no words, just raw emotion spilling out of my mouth. I ended up kneeling in front of Yuri's grave crying as though my heart would break. I had no hope now. Suddenly, I heard a voice from behind me.

"What's all the screaming for, girl?" It was a man, speaking French. I turned and saw…no.  Even after all these years, he was unmistakable.  I was astonished by the coincidence, even though I’d come here trying to find him.

"Uncle Geppeto?"

He peered at me through the gloom, adjusting his glasses. "Uncle - Alice? Is that you?"

I nodded. "Yes," I sniffed a little, and wiped the tears from my face. It was raining now, so the gesture was more for effect than anything else.

He hobbled toward me. "Whatever's happened?"

I sniffed again, trying to hold back the tears. "Yuri. It's Yuri. He's gone,"

He put his arm around me. "Come home with me. I haven't seen you in years. Now, tell me, who's Yuri? Someone special to you?"

I nodded and started crying again as he took me back to his home.

HabitRPG, Part 2

An update to my earlier post.  For those who didn't read it, HabitRPG is a browser-based real life incentive game (with iOS and Android apps).  You set yourself various tasks to do in real life, and earn exp and gold when you do them.  Gold can be exchanged for various rewards, either self-imposed or set by the game itself.

I gave an overview of the game in my previous post, so this one will focus on my experiences with the game since starting.  I've managed to do a lot of things I'd normally put off, for instance, actually watching a DVD I bought months ago.  And I've avoided doing some things I normally would have, like buying new books.  I've also kept up with studying Python and finished a coursera course.  Right now, I'm in the process of another one, on guitar skills.

At level 10, you can choose a class for your character.  I went with a mage, which really isn't me.  Normally, I'd go for a red mage, because I love being a good all rounder.  Seriously; I can slog through piles of enemies with a decent strength and defence stat, just burn them all if I'm set upon by a crowd, and heal myself whenever I need to.  What's not to love about a red mage?  Unfortunately, it wasn't an option.

Classes

Class options are as follows;

Warrior - Deals high damage to tasks - so they get back to the good colours (blue, green) and away from bad ones (red) faster.  Moderate defence (takes less damage from undone dailies).  Can buff strength and constitution (more on those later).

Healer - High defence against undone tasks, can heal themselves and their party members.  So, useful if you or your team aren't always brilliant about getting your dailies done.  Can buff constitution.

Rogue - gets more random item drops and gold from completing tasks.  Higher chance of dealing critical hits, which result in more exp and gold.  Can use a stealth skill to avoid damage from undone dailies.

Mage - Moderate damage to tasks.  High experience, can buff intelligence, restore MP and freeze streaks.

My party - me as a mage and Bookety as a cleric.

My logic was...well, I don't miss dailies, so neither Healer nor Warrior gave me much of an advantage.  Plus, I hate the thought of being a healer.  I am not a frigging support character, I'm a one-woman party of a red mage.  Though, in fairness, HabitRPG healers are rather better at soloing than most RPG healers, my mind still rebels against classing myself as one.  So that left Rogue and Mage.  I like gold and random items, but, again, since I don't miss dailies, the special skill didn't offer much.  Plus, it seemed like an overdose of gold and items would make the game too easy, rather than just a boost in levelling, which would get me similar advantages anyway, once my stats went up.  Plus, since you can decide where your own stats go each level, I could boost strength as much as I wanted.  And there's nothing stopping my little mage from carrying a sword if she likes - you can't buy new ones, but you can have your staff equipped and show you avatar as carrying a sword if you like.  So Mage it was.

Attributes

Strength - increases damage done to tasks, restoring them to a healthy colour faster.  Also increases bonus when a critical is scored.

Constitution - decreases damage taken from not completing dailies, or bosses.

Intelligence - increases experience earned from tasks.  Also increases mp, which is used for casting spells.

Perception - increases gold and items gained.  Also increases the rewards for streak bonuses.

...so, for the way I play the game, intelligence and perception are important focuses for me, with strength as a secondary consideration.  I'm a squishy, glass cannon wizard.  Bookety up there is my tank.

Pets

Sometimes, when completing a task you'll gain items - generally, either food, eggs, or hatching potions.  You can use the hatching potions to hatch the various eggs into different types of animals.  There are nine different types of eggs and ten different kinds of hatching potions, for a total of ninety different pets, not counting gryphons.  Pets can appear in your avatar, and will grow into mounts when you feed them enough.  That one in my avatar is a red fox mount, while Bookety has a skeleton something-or-other pet.  Possibly dragon.

Pets are cute little collectibles, and a fun way to keep the game more interesting.  If you have the gems, you can buy eggs, potions, and food in the market.

Subscribing

You are able to subscribe to HabitRPG.  Basically, you give them $5 a month, and they give you a couple of perks.  I decided to go for this yesterday, based on the following considerations.  Firstly, £3 a month?  I spent that on a starbucks hot chocolate.  Secondly, it's pretty much the only way to get gems, which unlocks a fair bit of extra gameplay.  Finally, they deserve it.

The big reward for me, as I said, was the gems.  Formerly, you'd automatically get a couple of gems each month, but after a recent upgrade, that system has changed.  Now, you can buy a gem for twenty gold pieces, so you do still have to earn them.  I do prefer that system, really.

You also get the ads disabled, retain the full history of your entries, and your daily drop caps are doubled.

Quests

You can purchase quest scroll for 4 gems each.  I've just started one, and I'm waiting for Bookety to join, so more on that once we've actually done it.

Paralells Between Shadow Hearts and Final Fantasy X/X-2

In playing the Shadow Hearts series and Final Fantasy X and X-2 I've noticed a number of parallels.

Warning; Spoilers for SH and FFX/X-2 From Here On In

Shadow Hearts focuses on Yuri and Alice.  It begins when Yuri saves Alice from Albert, and continues with their journey together.  Yuri is tormented by the fusion monsters inside him, and Alice bargains with them to rescue his soul.  In the bad ending, which is canonical, Alice dies and Yuri lives because of this deal.  In this canonical ending, Yuri doesn't know that Alice is going to die until it happens.

Final Fantasy X focuses on Yuna and Tidus' journey.  Yuna is attempting to attain the final summon, which will kill her.  Everyone but Tidus is aware of this.  Once he does find out, he vows to find a way to prevent it, which he does, sacrificing himself.  Final Fantasy X does not have any alternative endings.

The parallels here are obvious.  Both Yuna and Yuri would have died without Tidus' and Alice's interventions.

Shadow Hearts II and Final Fantasy X-2 focus on Yuri and Yuna coming to terms with the death of Tidus and Alice.  Shadow Hearts II focuses more on Karin and her feelings for Yuri, so his feelings are purposefully obscured, for the purposes of fucking with us.  However, what we do see of Yuri involves him not getting over her death.  Of course, she's been dead for less than six months, if I recall correctly.  Furthermore, Alice's ghost lives deep inside his mind, like his father did in the first game.  That makes sense - that's where her grave appeared once she'd made the original pact.  This is most likely not helping him to recover, at all.

Yuri himself has been cursed, yet again.  This time, his soul is going to dissolve, leaving him an empty shell with no memories. That on top of everything else gives him a reason to cling to Alice's memory even more.

In the good ending of Shadow Hearts II, Yuri evades the mistletoe curse by dying.  His soul goes back in time, to the start of the first game, with the implication that the good ending becomes canonical the second time around.  This is confirmed in the third game, when Roger Bacon claims he's never performed the Emigre ritual before.  If that's the case, then this Roger Bacon cannot have lived through the events of Shadow Hearts II, indicating that, in this timeline, they never happened.

Anyway; Yuri's journey in Shadow Hearts II can be described as him striving to keep Alice.  In the first game, he told us he'd rather die than live without his soul.  This game is him coming to terms with the fact that that is his choice; he can lose Alice and his soul, or he can die.

Final Fantasy X-2 has a number of endings.  The two best endings involve Yuna reuniting with Tidus.  The mechanism for this is not her dying, but rather his being brought back to life.

Yuna's journey is entirely focused on searching for Tidus.  In the other endings she longs for him still, despite building a new life without him.  In one notable ending, she can choose not to revive him, despite attaining the ability to.

Looking for parallels, we can see that in both sequels, the pairs are reunited.  In Shadow Hearts, it's by Yuri dying.  In Final Fantasy it's through Tidus being brought back to life.

It is worth noting that both games included mechanisms by which Tidus and Alice could be revived.  The entire Shadow Hearts series is built around the Emigre maniscript, a document which explicitly explains how to revive the dead.  We later see it work successfully, in Shadow Hearts 3

Tidus was a creation of the fayth the entire time; he was never real in the way that the rest of his world was.  However, the entire mechanism for his imagining was destroyed during Final Fantasy X, which is why he disappeared in the first place.

In short, you could find a lot more justification for Alice being revived than for Tidus.  So why did Yuri die while Tidus lived?

I feel that the reason for this difference, and the contrast, is because Shadow Hearts  is darker and edgier, and more realistic.  Although it has fantastical elements, it is more firmly rooted in reality.  The first world war is a major plot point, and real world people and locations are used.  In that world, Alice couldn't come back to life.  Her death was real, it meant something.  She couldn't be revived for the same reason Aeris couldn't be revived; because her death was real to the players, and it hurts too much when fictitious deaths that feel real are revoked.  It highlights how it can't happen in real life.

In Yuna's world, Tidus could be revived.  X-2 was happier and lighter than the first game, while, in contrast, Shadow Hearts II was often darker than the original - see Yuri brutally beating the politician who'd caused the deaths of both his parents for example.  I feel that X-2 departed further from reality to the point where we could accept Tidus' revival.  It felt like it made more sense within the plot and the tone of the story.

Foreshadowing....

Yuri, after Alice comes to the graveyard to save him. "I'd much rather die than go on living with a dead soul."

Real Life Incentive Games: HabitRPG

Another IRL incentive I've found recently is HabitRPG.  The premise is simple; you set goals for yourself, in a variety of categories.  When you complete those goals, you earn exp and coins with which to buy rewards.

Tasks - Habit, Daily, and To Do

Your goals can be anything.  You can set them as Habits, which means you get a reward whenever you repeat the activity, but with no time limit.  There are Daily Tasks, which are things you intend to repeat each day, and which will damage your hit points if you don't.  And, finally, there's a To Do list for longer term, one-off goals.

At the moment, my Daily Tasks include things I have to do every day, but which I don't enjoy, like washing out my hedgehog's wheel.  I've also listed feeding my hedgehog, which is probably the most important thing I do everyday, but which is so tiny and habitual that it's easy to forget (note: I have never failed to feed my hedgehog, but I have, at least once, gotten up at midnight to do it).  Then there are things I've been working on; practice Python, read something off my unread pile, make tomorrow's lunch, exercise (since I'm doing it for Pact anyway), etc etc.

My habits are things I intend to do more often, but not daily.  Things like making new recipes, or playing my guitar, or writing.  Incidentally, I started playing the guitar in November of 2012; I made it a rule to practice everyday, and guess what?  Now I can play the guitar.  Here's hoping Python will work the same way.

You can also set negative things in the Habits column.  In my case, if I go over budget, throw food away rather than using it before it goes off, or buy a new book, I'll lose hp and gold instead of gaining exp (I assume; I haven't done those things yet, and don't want to hurt my avatar just to test it).

Finally, the To Do list.  That's where my big ticket tasks go.  For instance, finishing Gone with the Wind.  It's good, I'm enjoying it, but it's 1010 pages long.  I need some kind of reward for that!  I've also got things like cooking with nettles, dandelions and acorns.  All three grow in our garden, and it'd be nice to try them at least once.  Not now obviously, but in summer and autumn.  Other things, like getting out of debt, and reading more than 324 books this year (that's how many I read last year) are on there too.  Along with some silly things, like making corn on the cob, which I've never tried before.  The difficulty adjusts itself based on how long the items go undone, so you get more rewards for one that you do infrequently.

Rewards

You can also set your own rewards, to be purchased with the gold and silver coins you're getting for all these tasks.  At first, I thought the rewards were far too easy to get, until I realised I could change how much they cost.  For instance, I've decided I can get an audiobook for 250 coins.  I have a subscription to Audible, for two books a month, but I normally finish them faster, and I'd like to top up occasionally.  I just can't seem to justify buying an audiobook for £15 when my credits will be coming in in a week or two, even when I want to.  So setting it as a reward is like giving me permission to buy it for myself.  I've also put in a few things I've been thinking of getting, like a new bed and a new TV (500gold coins and 1000 gold coins), and some cheaper things, like renting a movie off Blinkbox (100 gold coins if it's over £2.  If it's one of their 99p Monday movies, I'm not going to make myself wait, not least because the discount only lasts 24 hours).

HabitRPG also provides you with a couple of rewards to buy.  Mostly, it's equipment to make life easier, like armour that reduces how much missed dailies hurt you, or swords which increase exp and gold.

Tavern, Holidays, and Quests

Another feature is the tavern, where you can put your character for a few days while you completely ignore all your tasks.  It's a chance to take a holiday.  Also in the Tavern you can find people posting quests.  The two I'm taking part in are "to read a tome of compelling significance" and one about completing all your daily tasks.

The tome quests adds a few things to your list; firstly, it adds choose, obtain, and finish a "tome of compelling significance" to your to-do list.  In this case, a 'tome of compelling significance' is defined as one you've personally been putting off, or one that otherwise seems worthy to you.  I pick Gone With the Wind, since it's been sitting on my unread pile for the past ten years.  It also adds "finish another tome of compelling significance" to your habits list, in case you feel like reading another one.  I'm tempted to read Don Quixote.  I can read it at work, since it's on wikisource.  Also, it inspired that episode of Quantum Leap that I enjoyed.

The other quest adds "slay all monsters in dungeon" to your daily task list, ie, tick off all the other tasks.  It also adds 7, 14, 21 and 28 "clean dungeons", ie, streaks of perfect days, to your to do list.

These sorts of quests are user designed, and there are quite a few interesting ones.  Lots of them reward you with a couple of gems, which you can also get as a reward for donating to the project.  Gems can unlock some special features like different outfits for your avatar.

How is this Tracked?

HabitRPG works entirely on the loyalty system.  Why not?  As far as I can tell, you're the only one who can see your tasks.  You're also the only one who can set and claim your rewards.  Go ahead, promise yourself a whole chocolate cake for 1 silver coin, spam-click a habit and then gorge yourself silly, see how much fun you have.

Real Life Incentive Games: Pact

Recently, I've been replaying Shadow Hearts (including Koudelka) and all that good stuff.  But, what's really caught my attention since the New Year have been various incentive/goal keeping sites.

Pact, formerly branded as Gympact, is an app I've used since last year.  You set an exercise goal - in my case, five days a week - and a penalty.  In my case, the penalty for not keeping my pact was $5 per workout, the minimum allowed (yes, I am British - they don't support £s yet).  If you don't do your workouts, they charge you $5.  If you do, you get a share of other people's penalties.  The money fined from people who don't make their pact has 30% skimmed off the top for developers costs, and is then divided between everyone who did their whole week.  It's generally between $1-2 dollars per week that you get, and as soon as you have $10 you can withdraw it via paypal.

Your workouts can be made in a variety of ways.  You can link the app to a runkeeper account, and have every half hour walk or run count, which is what I mostly do.  You can also sign into a local gym, which will be checked via googlemaps (ie, if it looks like a house, it won't count).  As long as you're there half an hour (tracked by GPS), it'll count.  You can also link to a step counting app, which I've not explored, and have 10,000 steps in a day counted as a workout.

I started using Pact around Christmas 2012.  Most years I go down to a homeless shelter, and since I was unemployed at the time, I figured it would serve two purposes.  Firstly, if I kept it up for a whole year, I'd probably make enough to fund my next trip.  Hostels, trains, and lunches at various places along Oxford St don't cost too much.  Secondly, I figured it'd be a good incentive for me, which turned out to be the case.  Losing $5 is a much bigger deal than just not sticking to my plans.

I've found the Pact team to be very fair when any bugs or issues come up.  Since the new year, they've rebranded as pact, and included food-tracking and fruit/veggie eating pacts.  These work the same way as the gym pacts.  You vow to track your food intake a certain number of days per week, via MyFitnessPal.  As long as you log three meals a day, of at least 1200 calories, it counts.  You don't have to come in under your calories goal as long as you're tracking, which I think is a good thing.  I'd be tempted to lie.  It's embarrassing to track when I've been binging, but it's good for me to acknowledge it rather than just sweep it under the rug.

You can check out Pact here, and that page includes links to the iOs and Android downloads.

Final Fantasy VIII - Weapons

In Final Fantasy VIII you upgrade character's weapons by taking the right items and gil to a tool shop.  Each character has at least three upgrades, and you can skip right to the final one if you like, without passing through the inbetween steps.  Squall's limit breaks are linked to his weapons, but, again, you can skip right to the last weapon and get all the limits inbetween automatically.

Throughout the game, you'll find various Weapon Monthly magazines, which will detail the items needed for the upgrades.  You don't need to have the magazines on hand to upgrade the weapons.

You'll find the magazines in the following locations;

IssueLocation
MarchAutomatically.
AprilSquall's desk, when he has a single room at Balamb Garden.

Or, mug from T-Rexaurs at level 30+.
Windmill x 2Card Mod: 1 Abyss Worm = 1 Windmill.  You can find (and Card) Abyss Worms in deserts near Galbadia.

It's fully possibly to have the best weapons on disc one if you level and play cards appropriately. If you're playing a low level game, it's still possible, but you will have to Mod a few rare cards. If you do, you can get them back on disc 4 from the Card Queen and the CC Club aboard the Ragnarok. This is true for all cards except the PuPu card.

If you wait till later, using Tonberry's level up skill will help with some of the items which are most easily obtained from high level drops.

Completing Dot Hack Part II

Slowly ticking off subquests.

  • Get all party members affection to 1000 and complete email chains.
  • Get ultimate weapons for everyone (and complete the post about it!).
  • Complete Ryu Books of 1000.
  • Complete Item quest.

For the Ryu Books I need to do the following;

  • II: More all field portals opened.
  • III: More trades.
  • III: Trade with every character (missing: Hirami, Mayunosuke, Mutsuki).
  • IV:  Missing 22 monsters.

For the Item Completion quest, I've completed the Grunty Food, Virus Core, Items, Scrolls, Treasure, Head Armour, and Twin Blade lists.  That leaves;

  • Body
  • Hand
  • Leg
  • Blademaster
  • Heavy Blade
  • Heavy Axeman
  • Long Arm
  • Wavemaster

Completing Dot Hack

I finished the main game a lot quicker than I actually expected to.  Now for the subquests.  What I've got left to do now is;

  • Get all party members affection to 1000 and complete email chains.
  • Complete Goblin subquest (only Martina left).
  • Complete that area that both Blackrose and Terajima have invited me to.
  • Get ultimate weapons for everyone (and complete the post about it!).
  • Complete Ryu Books of 1000.
  • Complete Item quest.

For the Ryu Books I need to do the following;

  • II: More all field portals opened.
  • III: More trades.
  • III: Trade with every character (missing: Neja, Nekoski, Acerola, Borscht, Yuckey, Hirami, Yuji, Cima, Crest, Mayunosuke, Mutsuki, Oborozukiyo).
  • IV:  Missing 22 monsters.
  • VI: More Gott statues.

For the Item Completion quest, I've completed the Grunty Food, Virus Core, Items, Scrolls, Treasure, and Twin Blade lists.  That leaves;

  • Head
  • Body
  • Hand
  • Leg
  • Blademaster
  • Heavy Blade
  • Heavy Axeman
  • Long Arm
  • Wavemaster

I figure I'll do the item completion first, and that should mop up most of the other stuff.

So, What Am I Up To?

I'm playing .Hack//Quarantine, and I have to say, I'm flagging.  I kind of want to just get on with the subquests already, but I'm not far enough through the game to have access to all the areas, and there's not much I really want to take care of before starting the completion quest, which I am actually kind of looking forward to, even though it seems like a lot of work and backtracking.

I've stopped religiously opening every dungeon portal, since there's no further reward for it beyond increased items/cash/levels.  At Level 95, I'm only getting a handful of exp per portal, I have over 1.5 million gp, and I don't see any point in collecting items which aren't the best weapons until the item completion quest opens.

(Incidentally, I did make a post about the best weapons, but it involves a lot of '&'s, and stupid blogger keeps turning them into '&'.  I'll figure it out later).

I've also been playing Crash Team Racing, which I've completed before.  The ideal goal is to get all the platinum time trials and CTR tokens, as well as write a spoiler-free guide detailing that.  I'm using Dingodile, because he's fast and he's my second favourite after Coco.

My goals for .Hack/Quarantine and the series in general are as follows;

  • Every character with decent armour and the best weapons.
  • All character's affection at 1000.
  • Item Completion list filled in.
  • Everyone at level 99.
  • All Ryu Books filled.
  • Koeji (Kite) has best stats possible.
  • All subquests completed.

Subquests and Extras in .Hack//Outbreak

In possibly the most annoying move ever, they switched triangle and circle for this game - menu and cancel - and there doesn't seem to be any way to switch them back.  Why would they do that?

Again, I'm not including anything you can find simply by reading the board.

Areas on the DVD

  • Sigma Barking Hotblooded 500-Lohan (lv 62) - Ladies Gloves (in a chest on B4), Magnolia Miso (Gott Statue, trade to Flare).
  • Sigma Unusual Ghostly Remnant (lv 62) - Ladies Mail (in a chest on B4), Doll Amulet (Gott Statue, trade to Stare).
  • Sigma Noisy Sacred Ringing-Ears (lv 61) - Ladies Cap (in a chest on B4), 3-Floor Tower (trade to Alicia).

Note that the Ladies' Mail contains the Mumyn Lei spell, which you can use to put things to sleep.  Things like Goblins.

More Areas with Trade Items

  • Sigma Entwined Prejudiced Chaos (lv 68) - Rouge Fragment (trade to Cyan), Kokoro.
  • Sigma Greedy Gambler's Drift (lv 67) - Boxed Lunch (Gott Statue, trade to Benoit), Lady Killers (chest on B4).
  • Sigma Ancient Destroyer's Battlefield (lv 65) - Scent of Gero (trade to Fool), Lady Shoes.
  • Sigma Tested Morphean Alchemy (lv 68) - Fields Deed (trade to Waffle), Vampire's Blade.
  • Sigma Abrasive False Tragedy (lv 69) - Maiden's Plot (Gott statue, trade to Teria).

Rare Trades

Alicia - Cat's Hat for 3-Floor Tower.
Benoit - Yoshida for Boxed Lunch.
Cyan - Gimme Life for Rouge Fragment.
Flare - Cat's Gloves for Magnolia Miso.
Fool - Cat's Boots for Scent of Gero.
Stare - Cat's Armour for Doll Amulet.
Teria - Thunder Dad for Maiden's Plot.
Waffle - Dreams or Yore for Field's Deed.

I found it a lot easier than I expected to track down the people I needed to trade with.  If you've spoken to them before, they'll appear in Ryu Book III and you'll be able to tell if they're online or not.  If so, they're usually in the same server you are.  If they're not online, try logging in and out and check again.  I generally found one or two were online after each dungeon, so I just ran around town for a bit and traded a few things, then went and got the next few items.

.Hack//Sign Scenes

This is a long one, so see the dedicated post.

Areas They Pull You Out of Before You Can Get the Damn Gott Statue

  • Sigma Rising Implacable Sipping Bug - Gott statue has Blazing Robes, and Scarlet Plate x2.  Pretty much everything here will give you Virus Core H.
  • Sigma Sorrowful Sweltering Arena - Gott statue has Oaken Solleret, Silver Scarab, and Ivory Barret.  Bee Commandos on the field will give you Virus Core I, and Undead Voodoos will give you Virus Core G.
  • Sigma Fleeting Fallow Chaos - Gott statue has Owl Crest, Ivory Barette and Scarlet Plate.
