Horizon Zero Dawn: Audio Datapoint 40

I had trouble finding this one, so here you go.

Audio Datapoints 34-46 (if I recall correctly) are in this facility. You'll enter it automatically during the Deep Secrets of the Earth story mission, or you can re-enter it from this entrance later.

Datapoint 40 is easy to miss because it's on an upper level, unlike the others. To reach it, you'll need to find a ladder. If you stand at the entrance to the next room and look back and to the right, you'll be able to see it.

Climb up, jump around the three pins to the right, and let Aloy drop onto the upper level. Turn around and you should see it at the end of the path.

Ryu Books of 1000

The Ryu Books are key items that you receive when data-draining in the .hack// series.  You will get one for every ten data drains, up to Ryu Book VII.

The Ryu Books track various statistics, and will reward you for hitting specific numbers, ie, for meeting Grandpa five times.  You can get all of them in the fourth game, Quarantine.  Otherwise, a few more rewards unlock each game, as listed below.

The rewards consist of images and music with which to decorate your desktop, and videos of cutscenes, which you can view after gaining the data flag, ie, finishing each installment.  The rewards always unlock in the same order, no matter which achievements you get.

I was originally going to list all the achievements you can unlock, and which game you can first get them in.  But, really, that's boring and it's been done before.  I'm only listing the highest numbers you need to get, so you know what to aim for.  You'll only unlock the final reward in Quarantine, but you won't miss any if you hit these numbers then.

Ryu Book I
Chronicles Areas and Playtime
  • 210 Areas Visited
  • 60 Hours Playtime.
If you struggle with this, just hop in and out of a few areas, then leave the PS2 on overnight.  But, really, you shouldn't struggle.

Ryu Book II
Chronicles Magic Portals

  • 1700 Magic Portals Opened.
  • xx Field Portals Opened.
  • 75 Dungeon Portals Opened.
If you struggle with field portals, just go to a low level area and open a few.  For field portals, Lambda Lonely Ghostly Feeling.  Three.  You're welcome.  For dungeon portals, try Theta Chosen Corrupted Spiral, which has six.

Ryu Book III
Chronicles Players You Have Met

  • All Players Met.
  • xx Trades Made.
If you just talk to a handful of people as you run around the root towns, you should meet most of them without trying too hard.  Some characters won't appear until the game has been completed.

Ryu Book IV
Chronicles Monsters
  •  All Monsters Fought.

There is an excellent bestiary here.  When you reach Quarantine, simply look up any monsters you've yet to meet and go exploring.  Don't bother doing it earlier; you'll probably run into them anyway, and the effort will be redundant.

Ryu Book V
Chronicles About Your Friends
  • 350,000GP in Gifts.
I hit twice that just by making sure everyone had the best weapons in each game.

Ryu Book VI
Chronicles Treasures
  • 1500 Treasure Boxes Opened.
  • 1400 boxes, cask, jars and bones destroyed.
  • 85 Gott Statue Treasure Opened.
If you leave and re-enter a room, boxes and casks will reappear. Try Omega Chosen Solitary White Devil for Gott Statues; a two floor dungeon, with no forced battles.

Ryu Book VII
Chronicles the Spring of Myst and Symbols

  • 55 Encounters with Monsieur.
  • 55 Encounters with Grandpa.
  • 140 Symbols Activated.
For Symbols, try Omega Bigoted Snowflake's Capsule.  There are two immediately to the west of the dungeon entrance. You'll easily meet enough grandpas and monsieurs while completing the item list.

Ryu Book VIII
Chronicles About Grunties

  • All Grunty Foods Collected.
  • All Grunties Raised.
  • 230 Grunty Foods Obtained.

See my post here for where to find the food and the stats for the Grunties.  You should pick up enough Grunty food easily if you just grab a few whenever you go past.

Kobo Achievements

The Kobo is an ereader, created by a Canadian company and affiliated with WHSmith (yes, I am aware that eReaders are not games.  I don't care).  I have a Kobo Mini which is adorably tiny and fits in my jeans pocket.  I bought my Kobo just before Christmas, since I was going to stay in London in order to work in a homeless shelter.  In 2011 I took a pile of books which were heavy, awkward, and finished before I came home.  The Kobo was a LOT easier.  I wasn't sure about eReaders before I got one, but I love it.  I'll write a full review at some point, but, for now, I just want to talk about the achievements.  I'm planning on getting a Kindle as well, so maybe I'll just write a comparison.  If you're thinking of getting an eReader, and you have a smartphone, I highly recommend starting with the various free apps.  They work in much the same way as the eReaders do, and should give you an idea.  I wish I'd done that.

Anyway.  Kobo has a 'reading life' section which lists various statistics, like how much of your library you've read, and how long it's taken you.  It also has various awards or achievements that you can earn for completing various tasks (like X-Box achievements).  As well as the eReader, I have the Kobo app on my phone, and there are some achievements unique to the iOS.  There's also at least one unique to the Kobo Vox, which I don't have, and have no intention of buying.  There are several which are only available with newspaper or magazine subscriptions, and I've not intention of moving out of the UK to take advantage of those, either.

The table below is not a comprehensive list, but it will be as complete as I can make it.  You can have a look at some of the awards here, although I'm fairly sure that's not a comprehensive list either.  I don't have an android, and I gather that there are a few different achievements on there, and a few are time specific and have since been discontinued, so I've not heard of most of them. Unfortunately, Kobo seems to have lost interest in the awards system, as they've not added any new ones in some time.

When you first open your kobo, you'll see many of these awards greyed out.  I think a few of them only appear once you've got them, but don't ask me which ones.

AchievementSystemHow-To
Afternoon Rush HourKobo, iOSRead five times between 4pm and 6pm.  Open any book between those hours, on five different days.
All You Can EatKobo, iOSFill your eReader with books.  I think I had somewhere between 50-100 on mine when I got this (I've since cleaned off a lot of the free ebooks, on the grounds that the paperback versions of Austen, Dickens, et al sat on my bookcases for years and I never read those either.  Can't abide Austen).
Author-ized ReaderiOSI believe this has to do with the 'author notes' feature mentioned here.  I'm planning on reading Me Before You anyway; will update when I can.

I've just discovered that you can't get it from reading the preview, even if you look at 'all notes' and click on the threads started by the author.
Better in BedKobo, iOSRead five times between 10pm and 12am.  Open any book between those hours, on five different days.
BookLoverKobo, iOSLink your Kobo account to your eReader.  Although this is theoretically available on the Kobo, a glitch means it doesn't work.  However, if you unlock it on the iOS (by downloading the free app and logging in), it will sync across systems.
Breakfast of Champions/Eat ItKobo, iOSRead five times between 5am and 7am.  Open any book between those hours, on five different days.
Classic AttackiOS Read the five classic novels that come with your Kobo.  If, like me, you deleted the stupid things, these are the editions in question;

Since I've read all but the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, I feel no guilt whatsoever about cheating.  Just spend ten minutes flicking through the books while watching TV.

Note:  You can't get this by flicking to the start of each chapter, then through all the pages of the last one.  Do one book per day, and then do the Lost in Austen award in the same way, and you'll be most of the way through the Twain award by the end.
Deep ThinkeriOSMake a note in any book.  Long press to highlight a word, then click 'add note' when the menu comes up.
FacebookKobo, iOSConnect your Kobo account to Facebook.  This should be straightforward.  I did it fairly early on, in a 'gotta catch 'em all' spirit, so I can't quite recall how to.
FanaticiOSOwn more than five ebooks by one author.  Mine was Sheri Tepper.  You could probably get it with Dickens, since all of his are out of copyright now, if you don't fancy buying five books by any author.
FreeloaderiOSAdd ten free eBooks to your library.  If you're stuck for ideas, try here.
Fully LoadediOSAdd items from outside Kobo to your library.  I highly recommend Alicorn's Luminosity and the sequel, Radiance, but it's up to you.

Go to the app screen in itunes, scroll right down, and click on the Kobo icon (incidentally, I had no idea you even could scroll down that far).  Add a document or two (PDF or ePub) then sync.

Graveyard ShiftKobo, iOSRead five times between 1am and 5am.  Open any book between those hours, on five different days.
Happy HourKobo, iOSRead five times between 6pm and 8pm.  Open any book between those hours, on five different days.
Highly DecoratedKobo, iOSUnlock twenty other achievements.
I My LibraryKobo, iOSAdd a book to your library.
I Eat Books for LunchKobo, iOSRead five times between 12pm and 2pm.  Open any book between those hours, on five different days.
Inverted CommaKobo, iOSHighlight something.  Press and hold on a word to highlight, tap to make the dictionary definition go away, wiggle the little end markers if you like (this is a total pain to get right without lots of practice) then hit highlight down in the bottom left.
JuggernautKobo, iOSTurn 10,000 pages.  It took me about two months to get this.  Keep reading, you'll make it.  This is probably easier to get on the iOS due to the smaller screen.  You lightweight.
Just the HighlightsiOSHighlight twenty different passages.  These can be single words.  Personally, I just picked random words in Grimms' Fairy Tales.  Made some very odd sentences.  It took a few minutes for my awards to catch up with my highlighting, so don't worry if it doesn't pop up immediately.
Kill the CommuteKobo, iOSRead five times between 7am and 9am.  Open any book between those hours, on five different days.
LOLZiOSWrite a note with the word 'lol' in it.
Night RiderKobo, iOSI have this award, but I'm not totally sure how I got it.  The description congratulations me on reading all night long, and I know I got it early on.  I typically read at night, but I'm not sure for how long, or which specific times.
Not an Open BookKobo, iOSFinish a book.  This doesn't work if you open the mini-menu for a book (press and hold on book's name in library) and 'mark as finished'.  You need to go to the last page and close it by tapping right.
Off the WalliOSThis one drove me absolutely mental.  You need to share what you're reading in a very specific way, which took me a great deal of googling and experimentation to figure out.

Step 1:  Press and hold on the cover of a book in your library.  You will be taken to the overview screen.

Step 2:  Press the very rightmost button at the top of your screen in order to see a menu that includes 'share to facebook'.  Share this way, and it will count towards the award.

Step 3:  Repeat for a total of five times.
Once Upon a TimeKobo, iOSOpen a book for the first time.
Page TurnerKobo, iOSRead for two hours straight.  I did this during a very boring shift at the homeless shelter.  I was in clothing, which is where we have piles of donated clothes for people to sift through.  Even if no one wants to come down and shop, there still has to be someone sitting there.  That was my job.  Mine and Opal Kobo's (that's her name).
PapillonKobo, iOSShare on facebook ten times.  I found the easiest way to do this was to share my highlighted passages.  My friends list got very sick of my Jinian Footseer quotes.  Tough, they should have fucking read it.  It's a good book.  My favourite.  And considering I've read over a hundred books so far this year alone, that's saying quite a lot.
Playing HookyKobo, iOSRead five times between 2pm and 4pm.  Open any book between those hours, on five different days.
Pressed for DetailsKobo, iOSPress and hold on the title of a book in your library.
PrimetimeKobo, iOSRead five times between 8pm and 10pm.  Open any book between those hours, on five different days.
Quoth the MaveniOSHighlight ten different things and post them to facebook by clicking and holding until the option comes up.  Easy peasy.
Reading LifeKobo, iOSSet up your ereader. Impossible not to get.
Scout LeaderKobo, iOSUnlock ten other achievements.
Sleeping InKobo, iOSRead five times between 9am and 12pm.  Open any book between those hours, on five different days.
Total RecalliOSReread any book.  I did this accidentally, with Francesca Lia Block's The Rose and the Beast.  There are plenty of short stories you could read through twice with ease.  If you get the PDF of The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, then that'll help with the Freeloader, too.
Total CloseriOSFinish ten books.  If you can't do this, I feel bad for you, son.  I got ninety-nine problems, but not-reading ain't one.
The Twain AwardiOSOpen any book in the Kobo app once a day for two weeks.  Doesn't have to be the same book.
Lost in AusteniOSI believe you need to read five different Austen novels.  Bloody Austen.  Can't abide her.  There's something direful in the sound.
Witching HourKobo, iOSRead five times between 12am and 1am.  Open any book between those hours, on five different days.
Word Up!Kobo, iOSUse the Kobo dictionary to look up ten words.  Simply press and hold on a word in any book and it'll come up.

Yes, it's that time of year again, when I have another go at collecting every artefact in the game.  The above tables will be filled in as I go through this playthrough. I make no guarantees as to sticking with it.

I've gone back to my little Clavat now - Theia, the long-haired alchemist's daughter.

Breath of Fire III - Ryu's Dragon Genes

In Breath of Fire III, Ryu can collect various dragon genes. He can then combine these to morph into dragons with varying powers and abilities. There are eighteen altogether. Below is a list of where they can be found, in the order that they appear.

Flame

You'll get this one automatically, when Ryu is taken to Wyndia.

Defender

Gained automatically after Ryu transforms at Mt. Boumore.

Reverse

After using the lift and exiting Mt Boumore, you'll be able to find this in an ? spot on the southern side of the mountain.

Thorn

You'll find this at the crash site, after escaping from Momo's tower.

Frost

Behind the hut at Maekyss Gorge.

Thunder

You'll find this behind the hut to the north of Rhapala.

Eldritch

At the top of the lighthouse.

Miracle

In the Fire Cavern, in the room where you fight Gisshan, Scylla, and Charyb.

Shadow

Automatically, after fighting the Dragon Zombie.

Fusion

Automatically, after fighting the Dragon Zombie.

Force

In the Plant. In the room with the memo about Project AA, walk up the air vent and off the screen.  The Force gene is further up.

Gross

On the way out of the Tidal Flats.  You can't miss it.

???

Inside the hut to the west of Junktown.  It's behind a sheet.

Mutant

The top right corner of Steel Beach.

Trance

Behind the Yggdrasil tree, near Kombinat.

Failure

In the top leftmost corner of the Colony (not the Faerie Colony).

Radiance

Once you've got the Portal Drives working, head to the Container Yard and walk across the crate to the right.

Infinity

Received after defeating the Dragon Elder.

Breath of Fire: Puka's Doors

At certain points in Breath of Fire, you'll come across strange doors set into the side of mountains. These can be opened by Karn's Puka form - simply place him at the front of the party and press A to breathe on them. The doors are located as follows;

North of Auria - you'll find a DarkBR here.
Southwest of Gust - you'll find a LoveBR here.
Southeast of Carmen - You'll find a WindBR here.

Sunday, 19 September 2010

Breath of Fire: Mogu's Dig Spots

In Breath of Fire, there are certain places on the world map where Mogu can dig down to find treasures.

Northeast of Camlon

You can obtain Karn's Doof form here.

East of the Stone Golem/Northeast of Tuntar

Here, you'll find an A.Ptn, an L.Ptn, a V.Ptn and a clog.

Island north of Winlan

Here, you'll find a V.Ptn, an S.Ptn and a Sash. Nina must be able to fly to reach it.

Spyre

The entrance.

South of Spring/Northeast of Carmen

You can find the HeroBW here (Bo's best weapon, if I recall correctly).

Southeast of Scande

You'll be able to reach this point after Nina learns how to fly. You'll find an S.Ptn, an A.Ptn, an L.Ptn, a MystCW (possibly Mogu's best weapon), a StarSH, an AgileHT, a LoveHT, and a Life2 here.

Breath of Fire: Goddess Keys

Warning: The following may contain spoilers (depending on how you define spoilers).

In the first Breath of Fire game, there are six Goddess Keys, which were used to trap the Goddess Myria/Tyr. At the start of the game, the Dark Dragons are in possession of the six keys, and are attempting to release the Goddess. Throughout the game, Ryu and his team members try to get them back. The bolded headings are the menu names.

E.Key

The Earth Key is liberated from Nanai, where it is being used to power the quake machine. More specifically, it seems that the Quake Control simply amplifies the natural effect of the Earth Key, rather than being powered by it.

The E.Key can be used in battle to create an earthquake attack, which does a standard 30 damage to every enemy on the field. The E.Key can be used as many times as one wishes.

KngKey

The King Key is received in Agua, after defeating the Guardian of the Key. It is used to operate the Stone Robot.

L.Key

The Light Key is first heard of in Auria, where it is rumoured to be locked in the safe. In Bleak, the party learn that the key has been taken from there. However, after claiming the Dark Key, they are able to find the Light Key, safe and sound, at the top of the tower which can be reached through Ross' safe.  The key can be used to change the world instantly from night to day.

D.Key

In Bleak, the party learn that the Dark Key is related to the Goddess.  After Karn joins the party, they are able to travel to the top of the Light and Dark Tower, and claim the key by defeating Cloud.  The key can be used to instantly change the world from day to night.

TmKey

In Tunlan, the party learn that the Time Key is Tunlan's treasure, and that the Dark Dragon's are trying to steal it.  They also learn that it can control time.

The Princess of Tunlan is enamoured with Zog, and has decided to give him the Time Key, believing that he will use it to give her eternal youth. After several events involving explosions and hair-pulling, the Time Key is stolen by Jade's minion, Cerl.

Cerl uses the Time Key to trap Carmen in time.  Eventually, she sees the error of her ways, and gives the Time Key to the party.  However, when she tries to use it, Princess Nina is sent back in time, and can be found in Tunlan with amnesia.

SkyKey

The Sky Key is located at the top of Spyre, near Spring.  It's used to stop the eternal winter in Spring.

Braid: Definition of Completion

Warning: The following may contain spoilers (depending on how you define spoilers).

Braid has twelve achievements, as follows;

  • Traversed World 2
  • Traversed World 3
  • Traversed World 4
  • Traversed World 5
  • Traversed World 6
  • Completed World 2
  • Completed World 3
  • Completed World 4
  • Completed World 5
  • Completed World 6
  • Closure (Complete the Game)
  • Speed Run
After playing for 8.3 hours, I've done 8 of those - everything except traversing and completing World 6, finishing the game and the speed run. I also have four out of eight stars, one of which is the damned two-hour cloud one (which is why it's taken me over eight hours). I aim to get all eight stars and at least eleven of those achievements. The Speed Run, I'll leave till last, and may not complete, mostly because I'm clumsy at the best of times.

The above tables will be filled in as I go through this playthrough. I make no guarantees as to sticking with it.

I've tagged this as a mini-guide, so I must apologise for offering so little actual advice.
