Completing Dot Hack Part II

Slowly ticking off subquests.

  • Get all party members affection to 1000 and complete email chains.
  • Get ultimate weapons for everyone (and complete the post about it!).
  • Complete Ryu Books of 1000.
  • Complete Item quest.

For the Ryu Books I need to do the following;

  • II: More all field portals opened.
  • III: More trades.
  • III: Trade with every character (missing: Hirami, Mayunosuke, Mutsuki).
  • IV:  Missing 22 monsters.

For the Item Completion quest, I've completed the Grunty Food, Virus Core, Items, Scrolls, Treasure, Head Armour, and Twin Blade lists.  That leaves;

  • Body
  • Hand
  • Leg
  • Blademaster
  • Heavy Blade
  • Heavy Axeman
  • Long Arm
  • Wavemaster

Completing Dot Hack

I finished the main game a lot quicker than I actually expected to.  Now for the subquests.  What I've got left to do now is;

  • Get all party members affection to 1000 and complete email chains.
  • Complete Goblin subquest (only Martina left).
  • Complete that area that both Blackrose and Terajima have invited me to.
  • Get ultimate weapons for everyone (and complete the post about it!).
  • Complete Ryu Books of 1000.
  • Complete Item quest.

For the Ryu Books I need to do the following;

  • II: More all field portals opened.
  • III: More trades.
  • III: Trade with every character (missing: Neja, Nekoski, Acerola, Borscht, Yuckey, Hirami, Yuji, Cima, Crest, Mayunosuke, Mutsuki, Oborozukiyo).
  • IV:  Missing 22 monsters.
  • VI: More Gott statues.

For the Item Completion quest, I've completed the Grunty Food, Virus Core, Items, Scrolls, Treasure, and Twin Blade lists.  That leaves;

  • Head
  • Body
  • Hand
  • Leg
  • Blademaster
  • Heavy Blade
  • Heavy Axeman
  • Long Arm
  • Wavemaster

I figure I'll do the item completion first, and that should mop up most of the other stuff.

So, What Am I Up To?

I'm playing .Hack//Quarantine, and I have to say, I'm flagging.  I kind of want to just get on with the subquests already, but I'm not far enough through the game to have access to all the areas, and there's not much I really want to take care of before starting the completion quest, which I am actually kind of looking forward to, even though it seems like a lot of work and backtracking.

I've stopped religiously opening every dungeon portal, since there's no further reward for it beyond increased items/cash/levels.  At Level 95, I'm only getting a handful of exp per portal, I have over 1.5 million gp, and I don't see any point in collecting items which aren't the best weapons until the item completion quest opens.

(Incidentally, I did make a post about the best weapons, but it involves a lot of '&'s, and stupid blogger keeps turning them into '&'.  I'll figure it out later).

I've also been playing Crash Team Racing, which I've completed before.  The ideal goal is to get all the platinum time trials and CTR tokens, as well as write a spoiler-free guide detailing that.  I'm using Dingodile, because he's fast and he's my second favourite after Coco.

My goals for .Hack/Quarantine and the series in general are as follows;

  • Every character with decent armour and the best weapons.
  • All character's affection at 1000.
  • Item Completion list filled in.
  • Everyone at level 99.
  • All Ryu Books filled.
  • Koeji (Kite) has best stats possible.
  • All subquests completed.

Why There Are So Many Games I've Never Completed

Remember that the tick marks on the list to the right only mark the games I've completed every bit of (or as much as was possible and fun) in order, not all the games that I've completed!

Still, there are quite a few games that I've owned for years and never finished.  Final Fantasy VI, for instance.  Often, I just seem to lose interest when it comes to the subquests section.

Right now, I'm enjoying .hack, and writing down and clarifying  stuff about it.  But I still want to go play Persona 4 again, and do a speed run of Final Fantasy IX, and I know that, if I do, I won't come back to .hack for a while.  And, when I do come back to it, I'll probably want to start over from the beginning, and then I really will never finish.

Breath of Fire IV - Update

I was in my early teens when I bought Breath of Fire IV.  Maybe as young as eleven, which would make it thirteen years ago.  It was the first Breath of Fire game I ever owned, so it may be surprising that it's the one Breath of Fire game I've never completed.  I don't know why.  I've gotten as far as the end of Chapter III before, but no further.

There comes a point, in a lot of RPGs, where you need to run around and take of a lot of subquests and minigames before you get to the final boss.  That's always the point at which my attention begins to wane.  I think there's a part of me that doesn't actually want to finish games, because that happens quite a lot.  That's the whole reason behind my Completion Project - to challenge me not to give up at that point. Like I'm not going to this time.  I'm going to sit here all weekend and finish this damn game if it's the last thing I do.

I have very little left to complete.  I've completed every master and learned every skill.  I've caught every fish, though I've not crowned all of them yet.  I just need to get all the best weapons for my characters - which will involve more fishing, since I only have 51 stamp cards - defeat Treans and Riders - partly for pride, partly to get another weapon - and get through the final dungeon.

These are the items I've yet to get;

  • Mass Driver - For Ershin.  104 attack.  Steal from Chopam in Fou-Lu's tomb.

  • Nunchaku - For Cray.  145 Attack.  Dropped by Trean in Abandoned Village.

  • Linked Pole - For Cray.  133 power.  Manillo Store.  Trade 75 stamp cards for it.
  • Render - For Scias.  2 hits, attack varies with number of battles fought.  Trade 99 stamp cards to any Manillo.

  • GooKing Sword - For Ryu.  152 power.  You have a 1/256 chance of winning this sword by defeating a Goo King in the Imperial Castle.
  • Ouroboros - For Nina.  96 attack.  Casts Raise Dead if used as an item.  Steal from Beihl in the basement of the Imperial Castle.
  • Slicer - For Scias.  78 attack, 2 hits.  Dropped by Kolpum in Imperial Castle.
  • Angel's Vest - For Nina and Ursula.  94 defence.  Dropped by a Warder in the Imperial Castle, or steal from Star Gazer in Imperial Castle.

  • Dragon Blade - For Ryu.  128 power.  On B1 of the Imperial Castle.
  • Dragon Armour - For Ryu.  96 defence.  1F of the Imperial Castle.

  • Royal Sword - For Ryu.  96 power, two hits.  Steal from Astral dragon, a boss near the end of the game.
  • Royal Armour - For Ryu.  102 defence.  Steal from Tyrant, a boss near the end of the game.

I've categorised them loosely according to where they are, and/or how you get them.  I think my information on the Angel's Vest is wrong, since the game reckons I've received all the items from the Stargazer and the Angel's Vest isn't on the list.  We'll see.

I'm just doing a bit more levelling, to boost my stats to have another go at Treans.  I want to complete my Manillo shops list with points, so I'll do a bit more fishing for that, then try to figure out the most efficient way to get enough points for 149 stamp cards.  Luckily, levelling and fishing I can do while watching TV, so I'll be catching up on Elementary as well, or reading Carrie.  Wish me luck!

Completion Project - Breath of Fire IV Update

I'd forgotten how much I really like noting things down and writing my mini-guides.

Speaking of guides, I found the following in this one and had to try it;

   Nina's secret Combo
Fire Magic + Wind Magic + Melee Ability (by Nina) --> Phoenix
   Ursula's secret Combo
Earth magic + Fire magic + Melee Ability (by Ursula) --> Reflect

   Scias' secret Combo
Wind magic + Water magic + Melee Ability (by Scias) --> Ice Sword

That guide is so useful. Seriously, go check it out.

Anyway, my little dudes are currently running around near Shyde, not saving Cray (I don't like Cray; he has nothing on Rei), earning Zenny to buy at least one of every item, playing with combos, and generally having fun.  So far, I've seen Nina's Phoenix and Scias' Ice Sword, which, it turns out, causes instant death.  Awesome!

Completion Project - Hi!

Bored, I've decided to continue with my completion project, and finally finish Breath of Fire IV.  It was the first Breath of Fire game I ever played, and the only one I've not completed.

Ryu and Nina have just reached Sarai.  The problem with playing a game that you haven't played in ages is you forget all the little tricks.  Should I go and catch five jellyfish because I'll need them right after the Fishing Spot gets cut off?  Is there a missable learnable spell?  At least I've remembered to avoid picking up items as Fou-Lou due to the lack of shared inventory.

I've been playing Vandal Hearts II and Final Fantasy X-2 recently.  Oh, and I got a copy of Persona 4, which is fantastic.

Shopping and Completion Project Update

I bought some new games today. Well, new-old games. Croc, Spyro, X-Men: Mutant Academy 2, Casper, and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. All games I have fond (ish) memories of from my childhood, all for the playstation. I guess I'll have to make an updated Project List, and put it up at the side of my posts.

Last time I looked, they had Donald Duck: Quack Attack, which I seem to remember completing at the age of twelve or so.  I couldn't find it today, though.  I kind of want that and Ehrgeiz.

I want a DS too, for things like the Phoenix Wright games, Final Fantasy III, Time Hollow, and, maybe, Chrono Trigger.

Someday.

Kali's Completion Project Update - Breath of Fire II and III

So, yeah, my file's gone. I've completed the game before, and I remember the three endings and the main plotpoints. I'll just go ahead and move on to III.

My posts will be left tagged with Work-in-Progress. I'll go back and finish them, next time I play Breath of Fire II.

Breath of Fire III is another one I've completed before, complete with best weapons and armour, and all genes found. I don't recall if I got every skill that time, but I will this time. I also intend to get the maximum number of fishing points possible.

My review of Breath of Fire III wasn't very positive. I found it slow-moving and heavy-going, and I recall that I felt it lacked characterisation, in many ways. So, it may be surprising that I'm looking forward to playing it. It may be my least favourite in the series, but being the least favourite out of my favourite series isn't a bad thing, really.

I'm also quite pleased to have found GBemul, which has Gameboy games, and Snessy, which has a number of old SNES games to play. I've found the first game I ever finished, Aladdin, on there, along with Super Mario World, a game I used to play all the time. I couldn't save it then either - it had the same problem as my Breath of Fire II cart, I'm guessing.

Completion Project Update - Disasteriffic

...my GBA has frozen. At the moment, the only option I can see is to reboot it, and if I do that, I really don't want to start over, especially not knowing that this will probably happen again. Probably sooner.

....okay, I turned it off then on again, fast.  My old SNES games, when they wore out, would, occasionally, rarely, randomly save.

YES!  It saved!  Oh my god, I did not expect that to work.

Heeeeeeeeeeeey.

Oh, spoke too soon.  It froze again, and the sound went very odd.  I had to turn it off.  I'll try turning it on again later, see if it's saved, but I'm not holding out any hope there.

The game's available here, but I'm not sure about saving there, either.

Completion Project Update - New Games?

There's a few games I want to add to my project, generally old games I used to own, or ones that I can borrow. Things like Solomon's Club for the Gameboy, which can be played here. I admit, I have no idea what that game's about, or what the items are for, or what the point in collecting all those random things is, but I was mildly addicted to the stupid thing about twelve years ago.

There's a bunch of other retro games on there, but I haven't checked many of them out yet.  I have fond memories of Super Mario Bros 3, among others, so I might go search for that later.

Games I can (and intend) to borrow include Crash Bandicoot 2, Spiderman, a few Digimon games (I was never into this, but I am curious), and a couple more.  I kind of want to play Croc: Legend of the Gobbos and Pacman World again, too.  Maybe that old Tarzan game for the playstation. I might make an updated list one of these days.

GBA Cartridge Problems

I have a problem with my Breath of Fire II cartridge. It won't save.

Or, rather, it will save, but those saves get wiped when my gameboy advance is turned off. Apparently, this will eventually happen to all GBA carts. I gather from a quick google search that these cartridges have some memory inside, which will eventually wear out, and do this (the problem has been fixed with later things like DS games).

Oh hey, this explains why my old Super Marios cart for the SNES stopped saving reliably.

Anyway. The game plays fine, so I have a few options.

  1. Buy a new copy.
It's like £17 on amazon, with shipping, so I'd rather not.
  2. Open the case, remove the (soldered in) memory, and solder in a new one.
Again, I'd really rather not. Bartelmy does not do so well with the hot burny things. Plus, you know, I'd need new memory, and a soldering iron, and to know how to solder....
  3. Give it up as a lost cause, and skip to Breath of Fire III.
I'd rather not. It feels like cheating if I skip it. Plus, I ordered the official guide for III, and it hasn't arrived yet. I want to play it through with the guide (I already did it without one, not that it matters. Bite me).
  4. Play the entire game without once turning my GBA off.
This one is doable. I generally keep my GBA next to my bed, but I can hide it under my bedside table or something at night. I keep it plugged into the charger, so that's not an issue. The game seems to save okay as long as I don't turn the machine off, so quicksaves for the ending also seem like an option. We very rarely get power cuts, and if we did, it wouldn't be an issue, so long as it wasn't off for ten or twelve hours straight.

...so, yeah, I'll be going for option 4. Fun times.

Kali's Completion Project Update - Breath of Fire and other things

So, I've finally finished Breath of Fire. I can't tell you how many hours it took me, but I started it on the 28th of July and finished on the 24th of September. Bear in mind that I was studying over this period, and didn't play every day. I must also confess that I also dabbled in browser based games like Frontierville on facebook, Alter Ego, and Dreamworld and Epic Battle Fantasy III on Kongregate.

Frontierville is heavily addictive.  It uses pretty much every trick described here. It keeps giving you goals, and items to collect.  It uses an energy bar that refills over time, making you come back and over, so you're not wasting energy.  It doesn't charge, but it tries to encourage you to buy items rather than earn them, and advertise the game to your friends by making success dependent on having lots of other people you know playing (many people circumvent this by friending strangers who are already playing, who advertise on the official fanpage for the game).  Your frontier continually grows grass, trees, wild flowers and stones, which you need to keep clearing, basically running to stay in the same place.  These and other activities give you random drops of rare items.

That last bit is what makes the game easy to quit.  Ignore it for forty-eight hours, and your frontier is so overgrown that it's just not worth it any more.

Dreamworld uses very similar techniques.  It has an energy bar that refills over time, and it encourages you to return every day.  It's not really a bad game, not fully text-based, but not really not, either.  It's a bit meh, overall.  No plot to speak of, really, just a series of repetitive missions, and some goals.

Alter-Ego is a text-based life sim.  You start off as a baby, and your character goes through various experiences as he or she grows up.  Often the game will let you choose how your character feels, and how they react.  Well, I say it lets you.  Actually, the game describes how you feel, then asks you, and rebukes you for contradicting it.

I found the game to be very sexist, in many ways.  Mostly, regarding sex.  Girls can't initiate it, or be eager for it, or feel ready for it at a young age - they always feel bad, after being pressured into it (despite the player choosing options like feeling good about it, and agreeing to it).  Your character will always feel bad if she chooses not to have children.

It's not a bad game, just quite close-minded.  The creator's opinions seem to come through very strongly, and they're not someone I would really like to spend any time with, to be honest.

I played Epic Battle Fantasy III after someone complained about it here.  She's not wrong - the game does have all these things.  But, for some reason, it offends me much less than Alter-Ego.  I think maybe because Epic Battle Fantasy III knows it's silly and immature and sexist.  It's a very tongue-in-cheek, fourth-wall-breaking style.  I'm not saying that this makes it okay to be sexist, just that I feel it's better to know that you're immature and sexist, rather than having an overbearing opinion that this is the way people are, by some divine right.  At least that way, there's hope?  Maybe?

I may be biased though, I read Cracked for fun.

I may add the Epic Battle Fantasy series into my competition project.  I've got quite a while to consider it.  There's also a few other games I found in a friend's collection that I want to add, old psx games like Crash Bandicoot 2, and Spiderman, and so on.  We'll see.

Regarding Breath of Fire; I did manage to achieve my goals.  I finished the game, having found all of the Rod5 items, all of Puka's doors and Mogu's dig spots, and all of Karn and Ryu's transformations.  I also had everyone's best weapons, and possibly armour (I'm not sure, and don't really care).  Nina and Deis both had all of their spells learnt, unless they actually did have one left in that final slot (I really suspect they both have an odd number of spells).  I made posts listing where to find all those collectible and character-enhancing elements above, and I also wrote a post detailing the entire storyline.  It doesn't read terribly well.  I was trying not to embellish it too much.  I wanted to see how elements of the storyline show up in later games, and if I took too much artistic license, it wouldn't be an accurate representation.  That said, I wanted it to flow well.

At tricky points I referred to this guide  (to make absolutely sure I didn't miss anything), and to this one (when I got stuck in Obelisk, although it looks pretty thorough in other areas too).

I kind of feel the need to defend myself, here.  Firstly, I have defeated the game before, secondly, I used them to double-check.  Besides which, I don't think there's anything wrong with using guides.  There is a huge amount of satisfaction that comes from finishing a game yourself, but it's up to the player whether they want to use a guide on the first playthrough or not.  I generally try to get through a game once by myself, then use guides to complete it 100%.  If the level of frustration I feel at a certain part is ruining my enjoyment of a game, I will use guides to help me get through it.  Anyway.

I've also uploaded the maps I drew of the trickier areas (I wanted to be absolutely certain I didn't miss any treasure there), for future reference.  Once I'm done transcribing those into paint, I'll be ready to move on to Breath of Fire II.  For that, my goals are similar - best weapons, all dragon forms, and all unlockables/collectibles/enhancements/whatever.  I'm going to write out boss lists, but not a plot description.  I'll probably get started on that tonight or tomorrow, once I'm done with the maths coursework I need to finish.

Breath of Fire Overview

Breath of Fire is the first game of the Breath of Fire series, and was developed by Capcom way back in 1993.  It was translated and released by Squaresoft (who, for some silly reason decided to call Deis 'Bleu').

Breath of Fire wasn't actually the first Breath of Fire game I played - that was Breath of Fire IV. I picked Breath of Fire up in 2006 or so, for the sake of completion. It's a very good early RPG.  Well, my review is a few posts down, just read that.

My goals for this playthrough are as follows; to complete every subquest, gain every item, and end with everyone carrying their best weapons, armour and etc.  I probably won't take the time to level everyone up to 100.  Maybe 50.  We'll see. I've completed this game before, with everyone's ultimate weapons and spells learned.

Kali's Completion Project Update

In the past year or so, I've sometimes gone months at a time without gaming. Sometimes, I'd pick one up and play it for a bit, but I didn't really push myself. Whenever I got to the boring bits, I'd just switch to another one.

Now, I find myself really looking forward to playing my games. I'm making plans, like selecting my Final Fantasy I team with dice, for the challenge, or completeing the Shadow Hearts series by going Koudelka -> Shadow Hearts (Bad Ending) -> Shadow Hearts 2 (Death Ending) -> Shadow Hearts (Good Ending) -> Shadow Hearts 3. I'm looking forward to it so much that I'm almost tempted to just give up on the whole thing, and skip ahead.

That would be defeating the point, of course.  It's fun because I'm slogging through, and completing them all properly, and taking the time to appreciate each one.  It's the sense of satisfaction, more than anything.

So I'll be getting on with Breath of Fire, then.

Peripherals and Accessories

For my completion project, I'm going to need certain items(in some cases, for instance, the games themselves). So I've decided to make an organised list.

Breath of Fire III - this game was stolen a while back, but I just bought a new copy off eBay. I could also get the official guide, since I collect them, but that's not a necessity. Those are £40 on amazon and £17 on eBay, not including P&P.

Final Fantasy Tactics - I'm going to need an NTSC Playstation or PS2 for this.

Final Fantasy XIII - I'd like to have the official guide, in order to complete the set, but, again, not a necessity.

Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life * - I'm going to need a replacement for this one. Copies for the Gamecube, in good condition, are going for around £8. It'd also be nice to have the GBA edition as well, to link them. Friends of Mineral Town is going for £15.

Kingdom Hearts - again, I'd like the guide, but not a necessity. It would really help though, since this game makes me seriously motion-sick.

Kingdom Hearts II - see above.

Prince of Persia * - this needs replacing.

The Sims: Busting Out * - this needs replacing. It's going for a penny.

Replacements and Peripherals

In a few weeks, I'll be playing Breath of Fire III. This may be problematic, since my copy was stolen two years ago.

I had a look on amazon, and there are only used copies available - not surprising, since the game was released way back in 1998. One copy, for around £22 (not including p&p) which doesn't sound in terribly good condition, since the disc has a few scratches. Then, one for £29 which sounds much better. Still a little steep, though (I'm cheap).

Luckily, when I was idly checking eBay earlier, I found a copy going for £8.99, with £1.99 p&p. Good condition, too. Bargain.

I'm currently the highest bidder. A few other people tried, and forced my bid up to £10.06. I'm willing to go up to around £28, I guess, since that's what I'd pay elsewhere. I'd prefer to get it for £10.06, of course.

I'm still the highest bidder, but someone may be back to snipe me - the auction ends in an hour and a half. My max bid is set to £25, so I guess we'll see.

Another game I'm going to have trouble playing is Final Fantasy Tactics, for the playstation. My copy is region 1, and so won't play on my PS2 or my old playstation.

It is legal to chip consoles to play games from other regions, but not, obviously, to play pirate copies. However, no one will do it any more, so it's going to work out cheaper for me to buy a region 1 PS2. I may still have problems with my TV set playing it in colour, but I can live with that.

Incidentally, the PS3 is region-free, but not for PS2 or playstation games.

I've never really looked at region 1 only games before, but I guess those are an option now. Xenosaga looks interesting.

I need to find some kind of price comparison site for games.

Update; I had a look on eBay.com (as opposed to eBay.co.uk), and found a NTSC PS2 going for ten bucks, plus $11.45 shipping to the UK. That's just under £14. That's a pretty good deal, even if I won't need it for about half a year. I already have a converter plug from when I travelled in Oregon (it came as a set with a UK to US).

I did try looking on eBay.co.uk first, but it didn't seem to understand "only show me options from the US".

When bidding on items, people tend to get "fear of loss" - that is, once they've bid, they start thinking of the item as theirs, and picturing what they'll do with it, and what it will be like. Then, when someone else bids, they fight harder than they'd intended to win it back. So it's very easy to spend more than you intended in an auction.

That's a long-winded way of saying that I won't be increasing my bid over $15.

Update the 2nd; I won the auction, although someone tried to snipe me at the last minute, forcing my bid up to £19.50.  It's amazing how few people take advantage of max bids.

I've also been outbidded on the PS2 console, but I can let that go.

Braid: Completion Project Update (2)

Warning: The following may contain spoilers (depending on how you define spoilers).

So...after 11.6 hours, I've traversed and completed Worlds 2 through 6, collected four out of eight stars, and finished World 1 and the epilogue.

There are still a few things to do - namely, the last four stars. There's one in level 4-7, one in 6-5, one in 6-6, and the final one is in 1-1. There's also the Speed Run option. I played around with it a little this morning. Basically, there are six challenges you need to complete within a set time limit - five levels, and the entire game. I've tried Phase and Jumpman so far - my best time on Phase is 26.something, while my best time on Jumpman is 55.27.

My fingers are getting sick of hitting the spacebar - I'm not really one for puzzle games or platformers, to be honest - so, unless I change my mind, I'll be playing Breath of Fire from Monday. I'll work on Braid some more over the weekend, or when I get a bit bored, but I'm pretty much done with it for now.

Braid: Definition of Completion

Warning: The following may contain spoilers (depending on how you define spoilers).

Braid has twelve achievements, as follows;

  • Traversed World 2
  • Traversed World 3
  • Traversed World 4
  • Traversed World 5
  • Traversed World 6
  • Completed World 2
  • Completed World 3
  • Completed World 4
  • Completed World 5
  • Completed World 6
  • Closure (Complete the Game)
  • Speed Run
After playing for 8.3 hours, I've done 8 of those - everything except traversing and completing World 6, finishing the game and the speed run. I also have four out of eight stars, one of which is the damned two-hour cloud one (which is why it's taken me over eight hours). I aim to get all eight stars and at least eleven of those achievements. The Speed Run, I'll leave till last, and may not complete, mostly because I'm clumsy at the best of times.

Braid: Completion Project Update

Warning: The following may contain spoilers (depending on how you define spoilers).

Since I started playing Braid last night, I've completed Worlds 2 and 3, including all jigsaw pieces, and picked up one star, the one in the World 3 jigsaw puzzle. I admit to using a youtube video at two points. Both times, I had a pretty good idea of how to solve the puzzle, but it really helped to see someone confirm my solution, especially when it kept going a teeny bit wrong.

One thing I've discovered. When reversing time, hit 'S' (for the PC version) to speed up the reversal. This is necessary at one point in World 3 in order to be back at a certain spot before the platform is. The use of the 'S' button doesn't seem to be detailed any where - I just hit random keys until something happened.
